Stuck facing a blank page? Never fear! We’ve some excellent prompts to launch you on your writing journey...

 


1. Music


Music is a brilliant stimulation for our imaginations. In a few seconds it can transport you to a particular time, a place, or connect you with a deep feeling.  


Try picking a piece of music you’ve never heard before. How does it make you feel? If there are lyrics, what do they make you think about? What kind of story would use this piece of music as a soundtrack? These are all great jumping-off points for beginning a story.

 

 

 

2. Images


Image prompts are a really quick and effective way for sparking an idea or an atmosphere for a story, particularly as a way of stimulating questions.


Check out the images below – which appeals most to you? What story would you write about each of the pictures?

 




 

3. Sentence Prompts

 

A well-worded prompt should make you feel spurred to respond. They may even take you into new territory as a writer. Try these prompts and see where they take you:

 

  • A phone call that changed my life.


  • You wake up one day speaking a language that no one else understands.


  • “I’d walked by that old house hundreds of times in the past two years, but today was the first time I caught sight of a face watching me from the window.”


  • A box is delivered to your house. You open it and find…
